FELLOWSHIP OF THE SWORD

DISCIPLINE | HONOUR | SKILL

About the Fellowship

We are a group of fencers in South-East Queensland with a love of history and swordplay combined. We train to better our understanding of historical fencing and we perform in public shows to entertain and educate our community about this noble Art.

In the Fellowship of the Sword you will learn the techniques and application of multiple swords and other defensive items used from the Late Medieval period, through the Renaissance, and to the Age of Enlightenment.

If you have ever dreamed of becoming a swashbuckler, imagined your prowess on the field of battle, or contemplated defending your honour in virtuous combat, the Fellowship of the Sword is the place for you!

Frequently Asked Questions

We have quarterly intakes each year, so the next Beginner Course is never far away!

Contact us today to find out when and where we are hosting our next student intake.

You will need comfortable clothes for exercising (full torso and leg coverage for safety), sensible shoes (sport shoes, joggers etc), and we always recommend bringing a water bottle - fencing is thirsty work!

Real? Yes!

Sharp? No!

We fence with real steel in the Fellowship of the Sword, but the edges are rounded for safety.

Be prepared to receive the occasional bruise if you fence with us long enough, but our fencing style and instruction emphasises safety and control, allowing us to engage in most swordplay without the need for armour or fencing masks.

No need! We have school swords available to borrow on training nights and for performances, though in the long run nothing can compare to a sword of your very own.

We usually suggest you wait until you have spent some time with us before considering your first sword purchase (they are not cheap!), and we have some design requirements for safety and historical accuracy.

When you are ready to look at buying a sword, we will be ready to discuss options with you.

Being sword nerds, we are always keen to check out personal purchases!

Just be aware that in line with our standards of safety and historical accuracy, you may not be able to use a sword you bought (or made!) elsewhere for fencing with us. We will think it is cool, though!

The short answer is - maybe!

In order to ensure the safety of members, we adapt historical techniques in a manner conducive to unarmoured combat.

At the higher levels, we do periodically workshop new techniques or exercises from the manuals of the old masters, to see if they can be included in our regular fencing syllabus.

We absolutely love showing off historical fencing techniques at shows and events!

If you have an event you think would be improved with swordplay (and obviously, most things are improved with the addition of swords), please head on over to our Events Page, or send an email to events@swordfellowship.com.au and we will get back to you.
